Thousands of swan plants have been planted throughout the walkway so, between February and April, swarms of caterpillars and clouds of Monarch butterflies can be seen everywhere.

School group tours use the walkway as part of outdoor teaching exercises.

The walkway gully was retired from farming in 2004 and the next year 7,500 trees were planted by the school children of Hāwera.
