Ōpunakē is world famous for its surf and is known as the “Home of the Big Wave”.
The remains of the schooner 'Falcon', which beached at Opunake Beach in 1870, can sometimes be seen beneath the sand of the beach.
As far back as 1910 Brennan and a small band of enthusiasts formed the first Seaside Improvement Society, and down through the intervening years public-spirited men have always been available to carry on the good work.
