Ōpunakē 4616
If you visit the town (this visit or the next) at low tide, make sure to check out the amazing large rock pools at the Northern end of the beach.
In 1833 local chief Wiremu Kīngi Moki Te Matakātea held off a war party from Waikato for several weeks with a single musket, trimphantly defending Te Namu Pā, just north of the town.
Ōpunake has a thriving local art scene, with many artists having open studios to welcome visitors and running workshops throughout the year.
