Fun Facts

One

The wreck of the SS Gairloch has been a local landmark for over 100 years.

Two

Best viewed and explored at low tide, the remaining bow section of the ship has been slowly rusting and evolving over time into an iconic husk thrusting its spindly arms skyward. A short wade past this most visible section lies the remnants of the ship's engines.

Three

No one was harmed in the shipwreck, with all crew managing to row safely ashore, their belongings gathered the following day.

Four

Part of the fleet owned by the Northern Steamship Company, the SS Gairloch travelled up and down the West Coast, from Onehunga to Nelson.

Five

Though not a large wreck, the effects of the elements on the rusting bow has left an amazing array of colours, textures and patterns for visitors to marvel at.
